…and it had a pink ribbon here,
And another one here,
On the shoulder!
And the ruffle went from right here,
To ‘round over here.
Two layers!
And the petticoats made it stick out
Like a tent, like this,
Mama made the lace herself,
And sewed it in waves
All ‘round the collar.
It was my specialist dress,
My Shabbat dress.
When they came for us,
Mama put me in it,
(though it was only Thursday).
Everyone was crying
When those soldiers lifted
Their guns but I wasn’t
Even a littlest bit scared
Because I knew even bad Nazis
Would never, ever
Ruin such a pretty dress
With bullet holes.
